Extremely vulnerable people need to shield themselves to protect against Coronavirus infection. The government has, over the last few weeks, used several methods to identify and inform those people. They have written directly using information gained from our computer system. They have encouraged people to self-identify (see link above). GPs and hospital consultants have also been encouraged to contact people they have identified as being vulnerable – once we have updated this on our system, the patient should then subsequently receive a letter, although this may a take a little longer.

Shielding letters can be used for employers to allow for absence from work as per government advice. Some superstores are allowing priority online delivery slots for patients in this category who have a letter.
